The Problems With Finding Cheap Modified Car Insurance

By Ric Norton

Its a popular pastime for car owners with some spare cash in their pockets to modified their vehicles in order to increase its visual appeal or to improve its performance on the road.

Many people in our society don't have much respect for cars that have been heavily modified, but that's because of the association of these machines with young males with too much testosterone in their veins. But those of us of more mature years can enjoy making modifications just as much as these youngsters.

Its unfortunate that the joy of building a unique vehicle can be diluted rapidly when we go looking for a modified vehicle insurance quote after we have finished our hard work. Although its tempting not too we must tell our insurance company about all modifications we have made to our vehicles which will probably increase our premiums due to a perceived increase in risk in the insurers eyes.

Car Insurers hire statistics experts to help them calculate the likelihood of someone claiming on a policy but unfortunately these people have much less experience when considering risk regarding custom cars.

With this in mind, it makes sense to hunt down an insurer who specializes in custom vehicle if we want to find an insurance quote which won;t give us a cardiac arrest.

At the same time there are a few things which we can do to help reduce the size of our annual insurance bill. When adding accessories which increases the chance of theft such as alloy wheels and expensive sound system offer to keep you vehicle garages overnight and fit a high quality alarm and immobilizer.

Making performance improvements to your vehicle by fitting improved exhaust systems and boring out your engine will usually result in a big hit to your pocket unless you can find an insurer with a respect for modified cars and their owners.

If it is your dream to build a car with such major modifications it really pays to wait until you have accumulated a few years no claims bonus by which time you should be old enough that your insurer won't have a stroke when you mention the mods you have made to you vehicle.

The most important piece of advice I will give anyone looking to modify their vehicle is to get the quote from your insurance company before you start the work so you know where you stand with regards to the possible insurance costs involves.
