Cost of Car Insurance After a DUI

By Thomas Anderson

If you are facing a DUI on your driving record, an issue you will have to deal with will be finding cheap DUI car insurance. No matter what your record was before your DUI, once it is found out by your current car insurance company, you can expect to see a large rate increase, or even they can drop your coverage.

When you are looking into finding the right insurance company to insure you after you have a DUI, there will be some frustrations on your part. The reason is that most insurance companies will now see you as a liability and classify you as a high risk driver.

If you have to shop around for car insurance, you will need to talk to several agents or brokers. The main thing to remember is to be honest with them up front about your driving history. If you aren't, they will find out when they run your driving records check. Don't assume that they won't do a history before they insure you, this is common practice amongst all car insurance companies.

When looking around and talking to other car insurance companies in search of the cheapest DUI car insurance, you will need to be honest with the agents that you are talking to. Most are just taking information and putting it into a computer which returns the rates.

If you are not honest about your DUI, the company can eventually find out. This will lead to them dropping your coverage, raising your rates and even sometimes a criminal charge against you for fraud.

No matter how you look at it, finding cheap car insurance after a DUI will be tough. Being honest and taking your time will usually result in finding the best rates possible.
